Aqeeqah refers to the Islamic practice of sacrificing an animal (typically a sheep or goat) on the occasion of a child’s birth. The term “Aqeeqah” derives from the Arabic word for the fine hair on a newborn’s head, symbolizing the shaving ritual performed during the ceremony. It is a form of Sadaqah (voluntary charity) and serves multiple purposes:
“Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:46)
